Today on September 15th 2014, Sitecore Symposium 2014 in Barcelona (http://www.sitecore.net/Events/SymposiumEU2014/Home.aspx) started. The event of the year for a lot of European Sitecorians. After following the tweets of Sitecore Symposium in Las Vegas from last week a little bit (I didn’t want to follow too much what was announced, but that was hard to resist), this event will be awesome and it will set Sitecore so high in the Enterprise level of the Digital Marketing world. It will rock!

The day started early for me, waking up at around 6 o clock in the morning for a trip to Dusseldorf (Germany). The airport from which my flight to Barcelona went. It was a pleasent flight, i’ve downloaded some video’s on Azure Machine Learning to get a bit of an understanding of what Tim Ward will be talking about, cause expect some fireworks from Tim Ward’s presentation on How Project Skynet will change the way we create content.

After the arrival, getting the luggage and taking a taxi/cab, I arrived at the venue hotel: Hotel Rey Juan Carlos. First things first, getting the key to my room. Ronald Nieuwenhuis arrived (also a Sitecore MVP), and we registered at the event.  After that we had some tapas, If you’re in Barcelona, you want to enjoy the sun, and since I’ve been to Barcelona already before, in prefered the sun over a quick city tour. The weather was great (29 celsius) and the company was great, since Ronald Nieuwenhuis (Sitecore MVP) also joined the pool. We had a great time.

The Sitecore Symposium welcome reception was held at the pool at the Hotel Rey Juan Carlos hotel from 18.00 hours until 19.30 hours, which was a wonderfull location. I had a great time, enjoying drinks and hors d’oevres. I met a lot of Sitecore friends from the Sitecore community like Kevin Brechbuhl, Reto Hugi, Ronald Nieuwenhuis, Alex Kamburov, Bas Fluijt, and many more which was great to see and meet with them again. The 1,5 hour was actually too short but he, glad that tomorrow’s evening event will be longer.

At 19.30 hours sharp we needed to leave the welcome reception. Sitecore Benelux had invited all the Dutch, Belgium and maybe also Luxemburgian visitors to the Symposium for an exclusive Catalan night with drinks and tapas. On the way to the bus i saw Mike Edwards. We were taken by a bus to the center of the old city of Barcelona. We were dropped off at the Fabrica Mortiz, a beer factory that has been restored during the past 7 years by the famous architect Jean Novel. The Dutch community, which you will notice during the next couple of days, were treathed with delicious Spanish tapas and great drinks. A great location where tradition and modern design blended perfectly. A really great night for the first day.

The first evening was great and promises that this Sitecore Symposium will be one to to remember. I even ended up with Nate Barad betting on that the USA will ever win the first Worldcup then England, Crazy Americans! And thanks John West for the beer.

Tomorrow Sitecore Symposium really begins, with a busy program coming up.

Hasta la Vista!
